The Toy Run for bikers dates back to 1982. Since then well in excess of 350,000 toys have been collected for underprivileged children in Gauteng.
The 37th annual toy run was held before Christmas 2019 at the Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds in Northmead, Benoni. Each biker’s “entry ticket” to this fun event was a toy or gift.
On the day roughly 10 000 bikes made their way to the Sports Grounds, all made up with toys of all kinds. It is a spectacular view.
The volunteers were incredibly organised, toiling under a blazing sun throughout the day collecting and sorting the growing mountain of gifts. There were soft toys, stationery and carefully wrapped gifts.
Participants could select from a wide range of food vendors and stalls selling goodies, clothes, patches and badges. Live music kept everybody well entertained to a backdrop of joy and laughter. We were all delighted to make a difference in the life of a little child at Christmastime.
The National Blood Bank was present for people who wish to donate blood. The queues were long, and contributions especially appreciated at this time of year.
It is heart-warming to see different clubs, individuals and groups standing together to support the less privileged children. A few bikers offered the kids rides on their precious Harley-Davidsons. It was such a pleasure to see burly, tattooed bikers playing and carrying these little kids, sharing their generous spirit and big smiles.
