More Christmas smiles for Moredou
- Chapter Ride
Every year, H.O.G. Johannesburg links their year-end celebration to a Charity Ride that brings the Christmas spirit to local communities in need. Activities Committee Moredou Home for the Aged was identified by members Corky and DaleenWolmarans, and approved by the HOG Johannesburg Activities Committee.
Moredou is in Sasolburg about 100km from Johannesburg, and receives minimal government funding. The Home is run mainly by volunteers, and works hard to raise its own funds with activities like paper recycling and hosting a pancake stall at a local shopping centre.
"When we saw that their Christmas wish list included essentials like toilet paper and salt, we made it our mission to put some smiles on the Old Folk’s faces and make a difference in their lives this Christmas," says H.O.G. Johannesburg Assistant Director Craig Urquhart. "Toilet paper in a Christmas Hamper was not going to happen on our watch!
"90 Harley Owners and their family members attended our year-end function and more than half were allocated a pensioner to pamper. Each of these members put in time, thought and money to put together a Christmas Hamper that included toiletries, jam, cereals, coffee, sugar, slippers, and a few special Christmas treats. The balance of members made donations.
The Chapter raised additional funding to purchase groceries for the Home including meat, chicken, vegetables, cooking oil, a few staple diet items, as well as cleaning materials. A huge collection of clothing was also donated by one of our generous members.
In fact so much was collected that three pick-up trucks and a horse trailer were needed to deliver all the Christmas gifts!
Some members arrived at the venue early to start preparing a special Christmas lunch, set up the Christmas Tree, and unpack all the gifts and groceries. The Chapter Pack left the Dealership at 10h30, and made a grand entrance at the venue where they had to answer a lot of questions. We even took a few brave old folks for a short ride!
The handover was such a heartwarming event. The thanks, appreciation and big smiles were proof that our efforts were hugely appreciated, and some old folks shared that they had never experienced such generosity before.
After a special meal prepared and served by our H.O.G. Johannesburg members, it was time for the old folks to share a few of their memories and photos albums with us. Afterwards we assisted them to carry all their gifts back to their rooms, where the exhausted but happy residents retired for a much needed afternoon nap.
Another successful event concluded by Johannesburg Chapter, where we were proud to change the lives of folks less fortunate that ourselves.
