HOG Limpopo: Mozambique Touring Rally

Chapter Organiser:

  • Chapter Rally

What happens when you combine a Cross Border One-Nighter with a Prawn Run One-Nighter? The result for H.O.G. Limpopo chapter is a Mini Touring Rally to Mozambique and Swaziland with three border crossings and the best Mozambique prawns you can think of!

On Saturday 6 April, seven Harley-Davidson®s and 12 H.O.G. Limpopo Chapter Members from Polokwane & Tzaneen joined the group on route via Hoedspruit, Acornhoek, Bushbuck Ridge, Hazyview to White River.  From there we headed to the Komatipoort / Mozambique border post.  Harry Kruger, Assistant Director and organiser of this Mini Tour, gave us detailed instructions on what to do and what not to do, when crossing this border and we literally sailed through the post!

From here we headed to Maputo to cross over the newly build bridge….a few facts about this bridge:

  • Africa’s longest suspension bridge;
  • The Maputo-Katembe bridge measures 3km in length and connects travellers between South Africans and Mozambique in record time;
  • The main span measuring 680 meters;
  • It is 60 meters above the Maputo bay;
  • It cost a staggering R11.3 billion to construct – most of which was funded via Chinese loans, which already make up about 20% of the country’s heavy sovereign debt;
  • There is a toll charge that can be paid in Rands or Meticas;

After crossing this amazing new bridge, we stopped 72 kms from Ponta do Ouro for refreshments….

We drove into Ponta do Ouro around 16:30 after 740/640 kms for the day and checked into the Coco Rico Lodge for 2 nights, well situated in town to be close to all amenities. We had the best prawns at the Lodge’s restaurant, Shipwreck!

Sunday, 7 April was Mozambique’s National Woman’s Day and we celebrated this with all the locals – we will remember this as the day of R&R’s – their famous Rum & Raspberry drink.  We rounded the day off with a perfect traditional Chicken Peri-Peri in town – at Florestinha do Indico.

On Monday, 8 April we departed to be at the Kosi Bay Border post to be there at 8:00.  This border post is only open from 08:00 to 17:00 every day.

Our route today went via Kosi Bay, through the most beautiful Fever Tree Forest, to have brunch at the Boabab Inn on the N2, just before Pongola.  We crossed the border at Golela, close to Lavumisa, to go into Swaziland.  We rode through Big Bend and Manzini to check into the Happy Valley Hotel & Casino - 421 kms riding for the day.

We had dinner at Adega’s, just across the road that evening to round our trip off with good food and good company.

Tuesday, 9 April, after a hearty breakfast, we departed to go through our third border crossing on this trip, at Oshoek, back info South Africa.  Our route today was via Machadodorp – eNtokozweni – where we stopped at The HOG, an interesting small town pub, where we freshened up.  Here we split up into two groups – two Harleys® travelling via Belfast, Stofberg, Jane Furse, Chuenespoort to Polokwane 440kms for the day, while the Tzaneen Harleys travelled via Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad to Tzaneen - 430kms for the day.

A total of 1,600 safe kilometres for the two Polokwane bikes and a total of 1,500 kilometres for the five Tzaneen riders!  It was one of our best rides – wonderful riding weather, a warm and sunny day off, good accommodation, great food, perfect Harley Owners company – what else can you ask for!?  Very well planned and organized, thanks to Harry Kruger, Assistant Director, H.O.G. Limpopo Chapter.
